Our client, a leading online medical publishing company, is hiring an Associate Editor on a contract basis.

Associate Editor

Main Function: Edit news articles, features, opinion pieces, and graphic elements for clarity, accuracy, and style consistency for medical specialty publications and our websites.

Standards of the Position:

? To substantively copy edit and proofread news articles, features, and opinion pieces, as well as graphics.
? To evaluate overall coherency of the articles and edits to promote clarity and accuracy, in addition to implementing excellent grammar, usage, and application of News? style guidelines.
? Perform full coldread on pdf pages or input coldread changes on pages for both regular issues and supplements, as assigned.
? To apply a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of MDedge News? online and print production process when doing cold reads and corrections.
? To post articles on MDedge websites when necessary.
? To make independent decisions and exercise good editorial judgment.
? To verify facts as needed, including drug names and treatment modalities.
? To communicate well with colleagues ? editors, reporters, freelancers, and occasionally doctors and columnists ? throughout the company.
? To assess columnists? content for quality, appropriateness of tone, freedom from bias, and overall readability.
? To maintain an editorial tone overall that is free of favor and bias, as well as appropriate for a professional news organization.
? To remain flexible under deadline pressures.

Required Skills    

? 1-3 years? medical or scientific/technical copy editing experience in an online production environment required.
? Familiarity with InCopy, Drupal, Adobe, desktop publishing, and experience with online publishing and production a plus.

Required Education    

? Bachelor?s degree in journalism or equivalent combination of education and job experience.
$28 – $32 per hour.
